Sensex ends 407 points lower; Nifty settles at 10,454

Indian equities ended lower on Friday erasing earlier gains. Both Sensex and Nifty traded below 1-month low. At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex lost 407.40 or 1.18% at 34,005.76 with 23 components posting drop. Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty went down by 121.90 or 1.15% at 10,454.95 with 35 components posting drop.

Major losers in the 30-share index were ICICI Bank (2.33%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (2.13%), Infosys (2.01%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (1.81%), Bharti Airtel (1.80%), and State Bank Of India (1.68%).

On the other hand, Tata Steel (1.83%), Dr Reddy'S Laboratories (0.73%), Asian Paints (0.67%), Hindustan Unilever (0.57%), and Tata Consultancy Services (0.20%) were the biggest gainers in the Sensex.

Market breadth was negative with 1,327 advances against 1,205 declines.

Fortis Healthcare topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 1,436.16 million. It was followed by HDFC FMP - 1132 D - February 2016 (1) - Series 35 - Direct Plan - Growth (Rs. 981.00 million), Wipro (Rs. 940.90 million) and Tata Steel (Rs. 785.30 million).

The volume chart was led by HDFC FMP - 1132 D - February 2016 (1) - Series 35 - Direct Plan - Growth with trades of over 100.00 million shares. It was followed by Electrosteel Steels (25.16 million), Uttam Value Steels (24.76 million) and Kotak FMP Series 131 - Regular Plan - Growth (15.00 million).
