Sensex plunges 580 points; Metal, pharma, financials drag

Indian markets extended losses in the post noon trade on the back of sustained selling pressure seen across board on Friday.

BSE Midcap and Smallcap index dropped 1% each. All sectoral stocks were trading in red except auto.

At 13.02., the Sensex was trading down 580.46 points or 1.17% at 49,044.30 with 21 components falling.  Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 173.30 points or 1.19% at 14,417.05 with 39 components falling.  

The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened flat with a decline of 29.81 points or 0.06% at 49,594.95, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 6.95 points or 0.05%, at 14,583.40.

ICICI Bank  contributed fall of 88.92 points in the Sensex.  It was followed by Reliance Industries  (79.74 points), ITC  (71.77 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation  (59.91 points) and HDFC Bank  (51.79 points).

However, Bajaj Auto  contributed rise of 80.89 points in the Sensex.  It was followed by Tata Motors  (27.69 points), Hero Motocorp  (26.77 points), Tata Consultancy Services  (22.89 points) and Hindustan Unilever  (16.58 points).

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Bajaj Auto  (10.27%), Hindustan Unilever (1.25%), Maruti Suzuki India  (0.97%), Tata Consultancy Services  (0.89%),  and Bajaj Finserv  (0.53%).

On the other hand, Axis Bank  (4.22%), ICICI Bank (2.67%), Asian Paints (2.64%), NTPC  (2.34%), SBI (2.31%), Tech Mahindra  (2.21%) and Reliance (2.06%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Market breadth was negative with 864 advances against 1,942 declines.
