Sensex ends 196 points higher; Nifty back above 11,000

Indian equities ended higher on Tuesday snapping earlier losses. At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex gained 196.19 or 0.54% at 36,519.96 with 22 components registering rise. Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty climbed by 71.20 or 0.65% at 11,008.05 with 38 components registering rise.

Major gainers in the 30-share index were State Bank Of India (2.98%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (2.97%), Tata Power Company (2.84%), ICICI Bank (2.70%), Axis Bank (2.66%), and Tata Steel (2.54%).

On the other hand, Hindustan Unilever (4.00%), Dr Reddy'S Laboratories (1.16%), Bharti Airtel (1.14%), ITC (0.63%), Infosys (0.42%), and Kotak Mahindra Bank (0.40%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Market breadth was negative with 1,316 advances against 985 declines.

R*Shares Liquid BeES topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 542.84 million. It was followed by Federal Bank (Rs. 534.78 million), Hindustan Unilever (Rs. 511.91 million) and Magma Fincorp (Rs. 379.38 million).

The volume chart was led by Federal Bank with trades of over 6.06 million shares. It was followed by IDBI Bank (4.12 million), Jaiprakash Associates (3.17 million) and Punjab National Bank (2.86 million).
