Indian economy has expanded at 5.3% during the second quarter of fiscal 2014-15, betting consensus estimate of 5.1% growth. Gross domestic product (GDP) growth has slowed in the second quarter from 5.7% growth recorded in the first quarter of current financial year. However, GDP growth was slightly better than 5.2% growth witnessed in the second quarter of fiscal 2013-14.
Quarterly GDP at factor cost at constant (2004-05) prices for the second quarter of 2014-15 was estimated at Rs 14.39 trillion as against Rs 13.66 trillion in the previous year period.
The economic activities which registered significant growth in second quarter of 2014-15 over previous year period are 'electricity, gas and water supply' at 8.7%, 'construction' at 4.6%, 'community, social and personal services' at 9.6% and 'financing, insurance, real estate and business services' at 9.5%.
On the other hand, the growth rates in 'agriculture, forestry and fishing' is estimated at 3.2%, 'mining and quarrying' at 1.9%, 'manufacturing' at 0.1% and 'trade, hotels, transport and communication' at 3.8% in this period.
