Commodity profile - Rapeseed-Mustardseeds Oil Cake
Botanical Name
General characterstics
The press cakes are used as cattle feed, but since many of the types of seed contain essential oils, which can be harmful to the cattle the oil is usually removed by steam distillation of the press cake.
The rapeseed oil or the de-oiled cake did not command a premium price in the international market because of the fact that Indian brassica cultivars do not meet global standards. The problem is primarily due to two elements ? erucic acid in the oil and glucosinolates in the de-oiled cake.

Harvesting season
Rapeseed and mustard oil is the most important edible oil. The seed and oil are used as a condiment in the preparation of pickles and for flavoring curries and vegetables.
The leaves of young plants are used as a green vegetable and the oilcake is mostly used as cattle feed. The use of mustard oil for industrial purposes is limited on account of its high cost.
Market moving factor
1.Prices of competitive oil seeds (Soy, Palm, Groundnut etc) affect mustardseed prices.
2.The Southwest monsoon determines area under cultivation, and crop yield during the forthcoming Rabi season. This also determines the Khariff oilseed production, which also has a significant influence on mustard seed/oil prices.
3.Disease and pest infestations can affect the production of Mustard
4.Market players like stockists, oil mills and speculators dominate the Rapeseed market and influence the market price.
