General characterstics
Palm oil is extracted from mature fresh fruit bunches (FFBs) of oil palm plantations.
Crude palm oil (CPO), crude palmolein, RBD (Refined, Bleached, Deodorized), palm oil, RBD palmolein and crude palm kernel oil (CPKO) are the various forms of palm oil traded in the market.
Palm oil thrives well at temperature of 22-33 degrees centigrade with at least 5 hours of sunshine a day through out the year.
The palm oil and palm kernel oil are composed of fatty acids, esterified with glycerol just like any ordinary fat.
Malaysia and Indonesia are the major producers. India, China and EU are the major importers.

Harvesting season  
Palm oil may be used in a variety of ways. Trans free uses of palm oil are shortenings, margarine, puff pastry margarine, frying, and vanaspati.
There are also a variety of non-food uses of palm oil and palm kernel oil such as in soaps, candles, rubber processing, cosmetic products, fuel for cars with modified engines, and as a substitute for diesel oil for drilling mud.
Market moving factor
1.It is a perennial plantation and its production does not vary from season to season. Yield level of plantation is influenced by climatic conditions like rainfall, temperature, etc.
2.Palm oil trade is influenced by various productions, market and policy related factors.
3.The production slows down in the months of February, March, and April while it peaks during the months of August, September and October.
4.Supply and demand status of various consuming countries/ importing countries influences the price of crude palm oil.
