Castor is generally grown for its oil-yielding seeds. The oil content of the seeds varies from 48-52 percent in different varieties.
Castor is an important non-edible oilseed crop and is grown especially in arid and semi arid regions.
Thailand, Ethiopia, Philippines, Brazil, China and India have been the key producing countries meeting global requirements.
The major Castor growing states in India are Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. The other states are Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Assam and Bihar, where Castor is grown in limited areas. Castor seed and oil are exported to various countries, especially European Union, US and Japan

Castor is used as a lubricant in high-speed engines and aeroplanes, in the manufacture of soaps, transparent paper, printing inks, varnishes, linoleum and plasticizers. It is also used for medicinal purpose and in lighting equipment.
The cake is used as manure while plant stalks are used as fuel or as thatching material or for preparing paper-pulp. Castor leaves are food for silk worms. |
